"Give Everybody [..] a Little Bit More Equity": Content Creator Perspectives and Responses to the Algorithmic Demonetization of Content Associated with Disadvantaged Groups

Algorithmic systems help manage the governance of digital platforms featuring user-generated content, including how money is distributed to creators from profits a platform earns advertising on this content. However, producing content about disadvantaged populations have reported that these kinds are biased, having associated their with prohibited or unsafe leading what believed were error-prone decisions demonetize videos. Motivated by reports, we present results 20 interviews YouTube and analysis videos, tweets, news demonetization cases understand YouTubers' perceptions affecting videos vulnerable populations, as well creator responses demonetization, tools infrastructure support they desired. We found had concerns YouTube's algorithmic system stereotyping demographics in harmful ways, for example labeling it "unsafe'' children families -- errors led range economic, social, personal harms. To provide more context findings, analyzed report technique few used audit algorithms learn could cause LGBTQ people, culture and/or social issues.
